The Kansas City Chiefs are gearing up for the playoffs, hoping to become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
But two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes won’t be on the field for Week 18 against the Denver Broncos.

Mahomes has been dealing with an ankle sprain he picked up in Week 15 against the Cleveland Browns. Despite the injury, he played the next two games to help the Chiefs lock up the AFC’s No. 1 seed. While it’s not confirmed, it’s likely he’s been pushing through the pain, as mild high ankle sprains typically take at least six weeks to fully heal.
With the division title, top seed, and a first-round bye already secured, there’s no reason for the Chiefs to risk their franchise quarterback further injuring his ankle, or picking up another injury. Instead, Mahomes will get two weeks to rest and recover before the team’s Divisional Round playoff game.
